How to make money with blogs

  • September 27th, 2008

Yes, you have read the headline correctly – it is now possible to make money with blogs.

Until recently, a blog was something that was perhaps a little self-indulgent, but definitely not a money-spinner.

Now you can link a Google AdSense account to your blog. Adsense will then pay you every time someone clicks on one of the display ads at the top of your latest post.

This is incredibly easy to integrate with a blogging service like Blogspot, but there are a few hints and tips. The first is to make sure that your blog is worth reading in the first place. Blogs that are entertaining work well, as do blogs that educate or inform.

My own blog at http://infotechcomms.blogspot.com/ is called TechNotes and helps people get the most out of technology. The idea is to ensure that people keep coming back on a regular basis and tell their friends too.

You can also make sure that the blog is available as an RSS feed. Again, this can be set up automatically with some blogging systems like Blogspot.

So once you have visitors how do you convert that to cash? Google Adsense pays you money in exchange for being allowed to publish paid-for ads on your blog. The clever thing is that the ads are related to what you write about. If used correctly they can both enhance your site and make you money.

So how does it work? Google automatically provides you with its AdSense code. Then, Google automatically “reads” your blog and decides on the best ads to display.

It uses a sophisticated algorithm that includes such factors as keyword analysis, word frequency, font size, and the overall link structure of the blog.

If a visitor clicks on one of the ads they get taken to the advertiser’s web page and you get paid cash – easy!

Well, not quite. First you must have a site with plenty of visitors, otherwise it isn’t worth the effort. Secondly, your page must be set up in such a way that Google stands a chance of working out what you are trying to promote or sell. In essence, you need to look at your article title and initial copy to make sure that Google matches the right ads to your blog.

For example, on my blog, I wrote about digital photography. I made sure that the article title included the term – in this case “Improve your digital photography in five seconds”. Then I made sure that the words “digital camera” appeared in the first sentence and voila, Google threw up ads for digital cameras.

Don’t expect to earn a fortune though. Google is a bit cagey about its ad rates, but you typically earn a few cents per click.

On the downside, the very nature of Google Adsense means that users navigate away from your site, which may not be in your best interests, but Adsense is worth trying.

4 Tips Toward Making Resolutions That Matter!

  • September 24th, 2008

Turning the calendar over is an excuse to make personal resolutions for the coming year. It is also a way to bring about certain frustration for you if the goals that you set for yourself are unreachable, unattainable, or just something you have no interest in doing. Making resolutions can be done at any time of the year, but if you have been thinking about several new ones for the coming year, here are four tips to help you not only make resolutions, but to keep them.

1. I Resolve To… Okay, you have made your resolutions. Now, step back and take a look at each one. Are they resolutions you wanted to make or resolutions others have told you to make? Make certain that each resolution is something you definitely want to keep, not a half hearted attempt at reaching a goal that you really aren’t interested in reaching. If your resolution needs to be modified, do it at once.

2. My Goals Are… Are your resolutions reasonable or are they reaching well beyond what can normally be expected? Let’s say your goal is to lose 70 pounds in the coming year. While the weight loss resolution is admirable, do you have the time to exercise regularly? Change your eating habits? Change your lifestyle? Is the 70 pound weight loss goal too much, too soon? Would it be better for you to stretch the amount you want to lose beyond one calendar year? Consider your health: both physical and mental when evaluating your goals. Keep in mind how your resolution may impact friends and family members…you may be a “bear” to live with over the next twelve months!

3. I Have Fallen and I Cannot Get Up! Do you quit at the first sign of failure? If you splurge on food, do you consider your diet and resolution to be over? If so, why? Simply start again and continue. The road to any goal is paved with pitfalls and you are bound to backslide from time to time. Best advice: Find an accountability partner who knows [and understands] your resolution and can encourage you to keep it.

4. Reward Yourself. At the end of the year, reward yourself based on how well you kept your resolution. If you hit your weight loss goals, consider going on a cruise — don’t overeat! — as a reward for good behavior. If you miss your goals, keep the cruise idea open for when you do meet your goals. In other words, some resolutions are ongoing and shouldn’t be restricted by a 365 day calendar.

Remember this: resolutions are for your benefit, not your detriment. Your attitude toward a particular resolution will help you determine whether you should make that particular resolution or not. Any resolution made which doesn’t have your enthusiastic backing will certainly become a hindrance come February or March and forgotten altogether by April. Make resolutions that matter and be the better for it!

7 Big Mistakes In Goal-Setting – #5: Not Taking Knock-on Effects of Achieving Your Goal into Account

  • September 24th, 2008

The ancient saying “Be careful what you ask for, in case you get it” is a very wise one. Because your unconscious mind will do its best to give you what you ask for – no more, no less – you have to be very clear about what the goal is that you are setting.

Consider a businessman who very single-mindedly sets a SMART goal of owning a company with a turnover of a million in its first year.

A year later he has his company, it’s turned over a million, so he has achieved his goal. But – his health is shot due to working 19-hour days, he’s a hundred pounds overweight because he’s been living on junk food, his wife has left him because he’s never home, and he has no friends left because he has made deals with them that left him with a big profit and them with very little.

This is not where he wanted to be, but because he did not consider the consequences and knock-on effects, his unconscious mind gave him exactly what he asked for – and no more.

How could he have avoided this? As well as making the goal sensory-specific and putting a date on it, he also could have looked at the consequences of achieving the goal on every other area of his life:

- his health

- his family

- his friendships

- the wider community

If you don’t consider all the consequences of your goal, you may end up with something you don’t want. The smarter way to set goals is to take the consequences into account, allowing you to make changes to your goal and/or your route to achieving it. That way you stand a chance of getting the benefits of your goal while avoiding unwanted side effects.

Bonus tip: listen to your unconscious mind
——————————————

The conscious mind can only track around seven “chunks” of information at a time (less on a bad day) so it’s easy to miss something vital when you are thinking your goal through.

Your unconscious mind, by contrast, is potentially aware of everything, and it can notice pitfalls that the conscious mind overlooks. Generally it communicates with the conscious mind by means of feelings. So – check how you feel when you think about your goal. Do you feel enthused and energized, or tired and discouraged?

If you feel less than 100% about your goal, that may indicate that your conscious mind has missed something about the consequences of achieving it, so check again.

5 Simple Ways to Kick Start Your Goal-Setting

  • September 23rd, 2008

There are five important, yet simple steps to follow, which I believe are necessary for seemingly impossible goals to be achieved.

Step Number One

Spend some quiet time and write down exactly what the change or changes will be and why you want them, this is the first crucial step towards achieving goals. At this stage, write only what it is you’d like to achieve and why. The ‘how’s’ and ‘when’s’ can come later.

Step Number Two

This step too is very important, and it has everything to do with you accessing a state of inner peace. The peace I write about has little to do with listening to relaxation music, essential oils in a burner or harps playing (though they can help). Achievement of your goal requires having peace through a quiet mind and inner calmness regardless of the chaos around you and how long this chaos reigns.

When you have this (peace) you’ll have greater clarity, your creative self will make itself known, you’ll gain foresight into how you will achieve your outcome, focus, and negativity will have minimal impact.

There are individuals who know how to step into the state of peace; however others may require some gentle guidance.

If you find achieving a peace state challenging, there are 5 options listed below that may help you:

1. Find yourself some quiet time when you know you’ll be undisturbed and paint, draw, write, or map out all you can about your intended outcome.

2. Embark on a meditation program that will teach you a selection of meditation techniques.

3. If you’re willing to be coached, find yourself a reputable personal coach who can help you work through limiting beliefs and help you discover what your values are.

4. Seek out a mentor. This would be someone whom you admire, is inspiring, motivating, and successful, be available to you and who is a fundamentally positive, peaceful and calm individual.

5. Embark on a spiritual development program.

The world of alternatives is huge. To find something you’ll be happy with may take a little research, start by asking friends and family members to point you in the right direction. If they’re just not into that kind of thing it may be wise to broaden your search through the internet, books, and/or other members of your community.

Step Number Three

This important step is about gifting yourself with a fresh outlook on life.

Looking at things in a totally different way and from a new angle will give you a more global perspective revealing greater possibilities and may be achieved by:

1. Asking parts of you what is important to you, each time you receive an answer continue by asking why that answer is important. When you can go no further ask yourself “how can you change this issue?” This may sound a bit strange, however from experience this works.

2. Transformational Coaching.

3. Understanding your motivation or lack of motivation. Once you’ve gained an understanding of you, you’re in a position to become proactive into making necessary changes toward achieving your goal.

4. Reading autobiographies of how successful people did it.

Step Number Four

By now you know exactly what you want; you can step into profound inner peace at will; have picked up great self-help and self-healing tools; eliminated limiting beliefs; and worked out your values. Now it’s time to finally pinpoint exactly how you’re going to go about achieving your goal.

There will be many ways on how you’ll achieve your goal; however the time frame will vary greatly depending on what you need to acquire first. Maybe you need:

1. To acquire new skills such as sales, writing, technology, or marketing skills etc. for that new career you’ve always wanted to be part of.

2. To seriously start networking yourself and your product. Become known in your community.

3. To gather a team of like minded individuals that will motivate and inspire you into achieving your goal, whatever it is. Constant negative input can quickly extinguish dreams.

4. Start an investment portfolio for your future if you’re after a secure financial future.

5. Read as much as possible on whatever your goal is, it will give you a fundamental understanding of what it’s all about.

Step Number Five

This last but important step (they’re all important) is the calculation of when your outcome will finally eventuate. If you’ve followed the previous steps adding Step Number Four into the equation, you’ll be able to determine the time you can celebrate in a really, huge way of finally reaching the pot at the end of your rainbow!

1. Calculate the time it takes to complete your training courses or higher education.

2. Investment portfolio goals as discussed with your investment adviser.

3. Discuss with your business/personal development/ transformational coach how many sessions and ‘home-play’ will be required of you for you to achieve your goal.

4. Factor in time it takes for people to get to know you if you’re selling a product or you are the product. Speak with a marketing professional or someone ‘in the know’ first.

5. It’s important to be realistic about timeframes. Sometimes our greatest plans will go awry and will take much longer than expected (much like newly discovered actors and singers who have been plugging their trade for many years before hitting the big time!)

Sometimes, incidents will happen and be out of our control no matter what we do. Like my computer taking with it all my electronic office equipment earlier in 2005 (one of the most frustrating experiences I’ve ever had). To keep going required perseverance, patience and flexibility – it would have been so easy to give up!

Anyone can achieve goals through inner peace, perseverance, patience, flexibility and sometimes viewing situations from an entirely different angle.

High Rise Offices Rely on Framed Partitioning Windows

  • September 23rd, 2008

High Rise Offices Rely On Framed Partitioning Windows

Framed partitioning windows are the new innovation in high-rise offices;

In various major cities, high rise offices are relying on framed partitioning windows for the simple reason that the elements of the weather such as the wind, is somewhat stronger and the glass is considered durable as to a regular window.

Another problem these offices have believe it or not is birds running into the windows occasionally. The strong durability provides safety in a sense that there are no cracks or breaks and in most cases, the birds are not harmed. As far as the office staffs are concerned, the windows are much better for more than one reason.

The windows provide more resistance to the wind and elements of the weather.

Installation is strong and the windows do not seem weak.

Not easily broken, and more desks can be closer to the windows.

If the windows were of regular or normal pane strength in a high-rise office building, there are those employees who know the windows would crack or break. However, with the use of framed partioning windows, the office employees are not in the least bit worried about even having their desk next to the window due to the strong framing alone of the windows.

Learn about Income Draw down – Independent Financial Advise

  • September 12th, 2008

When you get to your twilight years of your career you do not have to extract your pension fund right away. As an option, you could come to a decision to put off buying a retirement income until the age of seventy five years old & if you do so you may possibly find you will get a more beneficial package. It’s branded as income draw down.

When you are somewhere aged between fifty years old & seventy five you are automatically allowed to suspend the possession of your retirement allowance from your insurance business. Instead, you are allowed to take away as much as one-hundred and twenty percent of the pension fund that could have been originally acquired by means of the Government Actuary rates, & leave the remaining capital secure until you call for it. On your side, all you need to do is to guarantee that you obtain an annuity by the instance you are seventy-five.

Nevertheless, what would result if you selected to take the income draw down choice, & then departed this world? If this did come to pass then your current spouse or those legally responsible would have three selections: either to agree to a lump amount, less tax at 35%, or keep on going with income extraction, or procuring an annuity pension with the cash. Your surviving significant other has until they arrive at 60 to suspend the possession of an annuity, but no financial benefits are authorised to be offered in the intervening time. For Independent Financial Advise visit www.firstplacefinancial.co.uk today.

Why choose income drawdown? Well largely because it could result in you earning a more lucrative retirement income from your current pension by doing so. Secondly, you can choose specifically when you procured the pension annuity, so if you retire at a period when annuity rates are very low, waiting could well be a smarter decision. If the remaining shares mature as expected, then simultaneously with the fact that annuity rates climb with age, you may ultimately be able to purchase an improved pension than you most likely have received initially.

Moreover, it also means that when you leave this life your wife/husband or those responsible are taken care of economically, as they are properly entitled to the remaining stocks & shares, as discussed above.

Like all financial investments, there are perils as a result though. If investment performance on the remaining stocks & shares is poor, the level of retirement settlement provided may reduce. And it’s key to be aware that there’s no promise that the pension paid for will eventually be bigger than the overall figure that could have been got at the beginning.

Web Hosts: The Basics

  • September 11th, 2008

Before you start searching for a web host, you must familiarize yourself with the terminology used in this field. The following terms are also considered key factors in deciding the suitable hosting plan that meets your requirements. You can start learning what does each term mean and how does it affect your selection.

Web Host A web host, also known as web server, is a computer connected to the internet. This computer is more powerful than normal PCs and is set up to serve up websites. Your website content will reside on this computer, which will give people who surf the internet a way to access your website.

Web hosts can be categorized into three main categories based on the price range and common features for each category:

1. Free Hosts: limited in space, bandwidth and other features. Suitable for personal websites or for temporary usage. Usually enforce pop-up, text or banner ads. They do not provide the best performance and/or reliability. They provide minimum or no customer support. If you register for a free host, your domain will be something like yourname.freehost.com or www.freehost.com/yourname.

2. Shared Hosts: most websites are using this type of hosting. Suitable for personal, small and medium businesses. Prices range from $1 to about $25 a month. Features also range from very limited space/bandwidth to semi-dedicated servers. Your website has its own top level domain (e.g. www.website-hostings.net) The number of websites on a server affects its performance and availability, more websites usually means less performance. Servers hosting less number of shared websites are more expensive, but more reliable. Some companies allow customers to host multiple websites with different domains under a single account.

3. Dedicated Hosts: A full server dedicated to a single customer. Usually used by large businesses and very active websites with thousands of daily visitors. The customer will have full control over the server, and can create as many websites as he likes. Customer can have his own hosting company run on a rented dedicated server. Prices depend on the specifications and services provided with the server, starting from about $100 up to about $800 dollars a month.

4. Colocated Hosts: very similar to dedicated hosts, but the customer owns the server hardware instead of renting it. The server will be housed in provider’s data center. Prices are a bit higher than dedicated servers.

5. Reseller Hosts: providers offer web server storage to customers, who then resell the web server storage to their customers. Providers usually offer resellers a discount price.

6. Other Hosts: there are few other types of hosts such as email hosts, media hosts, data hosts, etc but these are out of the scope of this article.

Domain Name www.website-hostings.net is an example of a domain name. It’s a name that points to where your website is physically located. The actual address of your website is a set of numbers that looks like (70.86.135.242). This address is unique for every web server. Domain names are just pointers to the real addresses. It’s easier to remember the domain names than the IP addresses.

Space / Storage The amount of web server’s disk space available for customer’s website files, images and databases. It can be as small as 5MB in some free hosts and as big as 300GB for some dedicated servers. Space prices reduced significantly during the last few years. Customer can find hosting plans offering 3GB of space for less than $10 a month.

Bandwidth Bandwidth is the amount of data transferred from web server to clients’ internet browsers. Each time a person view a page data is transmitted from the server to that person’s PC. Audio, video and images contents consume much more bandwidth than text. Bandwidth can be as low as 100MB a month in some free web hosts and as high as 2000GB a month in some dedicated servers. Customer can find hosting plans offering 75GB of monthly data transfer for less than $10.

Server Type Usually means the operating system than runs the web server. Common types are Windows, Linux and UNIX. Server type determines the server side scripting and database types. Windows usually runs ASP and ASP.NET with Access or SQL Server databases. Linux/UNIX servers usually runs CGI, PHP or JSP with mySQL or Oracle databases. Windows servers are usually more expensive than Linux/UNIX servers.

Databases As you have seen in server types, there are different types of databases. The most commonly used is mySQL because its an open source GPL (free) software and can serve a lot of online applications’ requirements such as forums, content management, mailing lists, etc. MySQL, however, has some limitations in its features. Complicated large business sites will need more powerful databases such as Oracle or SQL Server.

Server Side Scripting Most new users prefer to use PHP as server side scripting. The reason is that there are hundreds of open source (GPL) PHP scripts that can meet a lot of webmaster’s requirements. Similar to mySQL, PHP has some limitations in features required by advanced websites, which makes some senior web developers prefer to use ASP.NET or JSP. Other developers still prefer to use Cold Fusion, CGI, ASP or PERL.

Email Most hosting plans include the feature of having some email accounts with customer’s domain (e.g. admin@website-hostings.net). The number and size of email accounts depends on the hosting plan. Free plans do not usually have this feature, small plans give about 10 accounts where big plans do not limited the number. Those email accounts are usually web based and accessible through POP3 clients as well.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) A standard way of transferring files across the Internet. Most webmasters upload and download their websites contents using FTP. The upload or download processes are usually performed using FTP client software. To access their web servers, webmasters need FTP username and password. Some hosts give more than one FTP account to their customers. FTP can by anonymous as well, but its not recommended for security reasons.

Control Panel Most web hosting companies provide their customers with a control panel, a web based application that helps in managing websites. Common functions in control panels are: managing email accounts, providing statistics, managing FTP accounts, managing domains and subdomains and managing databases. The most commonly used control panel application is cPanel. Some companies develop their own control panel application.

Uptime An important feature of web hosts is their uptime, which is usually measured in percentage. A server that goes down for an average of 30 minutes a day will have an uptime percentage of about 99.98%, which is acceptable for most small to medium business websites. Anything less than this percentage is not suitable for a business website. Mission critical sites cannot tolerate frequent outages, thus they may use web monitoring services to notify web administrators immediately when an outage happens.

Price With the wide range of options available for customers, the price is also ranges from 0 to $1000 a month. Most personal, small and medium websites shouldn’t cost more than $15 a month. It’s not recommended for business website owners to go for very cheap plans (less than $5) because this price usually means a compromise in the quality of support and reliability of the server.

The Thinking behind Today’s Stunning LCD TV’s

  • September 6th, 2008

When Panasonic formerly began building a brand new leading collection of TV’s in about the year two thousand, their aspiration was:

(+) To present image quality so truly, that viewers would believe that they are not simply viewing but in reality taking part in the action. Why not visit Sound and Vision Online, to find cheap Panasonic 26 inch LCD Televisions.

(+) To highlight the sense of “really being there” by absorbing the television spectators in high-quality audio sound.

(+) To improve the experience by creating a sleek, fashionable, yet utterly unobtrusive TV that wouldn’t distract the viewer for more than a second from the action going on on-screen.

(+) To make using the TV as painless as practically possibly while furthermore maximising its networking possibilities.

(+) To imitate this goal, the newest series was approved to be named VIERA: signifying a new VIsion ERA. The outcome became the best selling & award-winning VIERA collection of Plasma & Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) tellies that are in shops these days, giving you the subsequent upgrades:

Picture performance: Equipped with Panasonic’s proprietary V.Real II / V.Real Pro II equipment – the consequence of months of dedicated study and improvement spanning the breadth of the television chain from beginning TV cameras through to TVs in your houses – every VIERA offers images of breathtaking reality & beauty and puts you solidly at the heart of the flick!

Unparallel audio: Featuring modern digital tuners & a few super-slim unassuming speakers all stored inside the shiny & lean structure of the Panasonic VIERA itself, V.Audio sound immerses you in the on-screen action.

Glossy and yet inconspicuous style: From the screen to the telly stand, VIERA has stunning smooth lines that are virtually organic in form. This ground-breaking styling has been the characteristic of VIERA televisions since the begin & delivers the notion of almost a “floating” display – which does not distract you from the on-screen action. Additionally, VIERA TVs have been erected from the ground up with the environmental atmosphere importantly in mind & feature refillable bamboo loudspeakers, lead free creation, & best practice manufacturing.
