Choosing Pellets

  • December 31st, 2008

There are different pellets because of their many uses. In essence, everyone has their own reason for using an air rifle or pistol and therefore the pellets should be chosen accordingly. Here are just a few of the general types of pellets.

MATCH PELLETS
Match pellets are generally made to precise weight and dimensions. Their exact dimensions and uniformity make them the choice of marksmen and Olympic competitors. Any variances in shot placement can then be attributed to the marksmen .Because of the exact tolerances that match pellets incorporate in their manufacture; they come at a premium price. Match pellets are usually most effective in guns that have a velocity between 400/600 feet per second. This is the velocity seen in most match air rifles. Because of their lack of aerodynamic design they should not be used in magnum rifles or hunting where longer distances and more power is needed for a kill.

POINTED PELLETS

Primarily used for hunting, pointed pellets are used in magnum air rifles. The goal is to achieve penetration in the kill zone with power to spare. Hunters have to be careful though that their choice of pellets does not over penetrate and exit their quarry taking most of that explosive power with it. In order to be most effective, the hunter’s pellet must deliver a blow that does maximum tissue damage. Because hunting pellets can vary in weight you will find that some of them may act as hollow points, flattening themselves out upon contact with the target and effectively increasing their caliber. That wider profile allows them to do two things. First, because their area has increased they destroy more tissue or there is a larger wound made. Second the drag created by this larger surface area causes more resistance making an exit less probable. All the energy is used in tissue damage.

HOLLOW POINTS
Hollow points are specially made to flatten themselves out or open themselves up to increase their area and cause maximum damage to vital areas. These pellets usually present a forward cup or yaw to the target to facilitate their transformation upon impact. Imagine being struck with a finger that penetrates and then mushrooms into a fist inside. This is the goal of hollow points.

ROUNDED PELLETS
Rounded pellets are the workhorses of the pellet family. They are the most common pellet sold and account for most of the all-around use. Target practice, backyard plinking, and hunting. Their shape allows them to have decent aerodynamics. That makes them good in most guns for practical applications.

SUMMARY
Remember; choose your pellets based on your application as well as your gun. Pellets traveling at subsonic speeds, less than 750 mph, don’t require great aerodynamics. Wadcutters or match pellets will work well.
Magnum air rifles can propel a pellet faster than the speed of sound or mach 1. Their shape is important because some pellets such as Wadcutters tend to tumble and leave the flight path as instability becomes a factor at supersonic speeds.

Baseball Pitches – Types Of Them

  • December 29th, 2008

In baseball, the term pitch is defined as the act of throwing the baseball toward home plate where the batter is waiting to attempt a hit, thus starting a play. The term is derived from the Knickerbocker Rules, and the ball was originally pitched underhand, as one would pitch in horseshoes. Overhand pitching in baseball was disallowed in baseball until in 1884.

A variety of pitches are used in baseball, all with slightly different speed, trajectory, and angle. These variations are used to keep the batter from being aware of what to expect and are “mixed up” to keep the batter guessing. The point of all this is for the defensive team to get an “out” for the batter, thus ending their half of the inning.

Fastballs are the most common pitch used in baseball. It is simply a straight pitch that is thrown at speeds upward of 90 miles per hour (the greatest pitchers have pitches that regularly reach over 100 miles per hour). Besides a straight fastball, variations of this pitch include the cut fastball, split-finger fastball, and forkball.

Speeds can be veried as well to make a hitter lose his groove. A fast pitch followed by several slow pitches really irks a batter’s timing to the point where a pitcher can dominate.

Get Cheap Cricket Items on the Web

  • December 29th, 2008

When you are just about to begin to play cricket it is not always straightforward to know what you need to buy. If you go into a sports equipment shop & ask them what you require, you will probably finish up getting a large amount of kit that you don’t need. So, it’s worthwhile to fathom what you may need previous to you going shopping. That way you are very much more likely to acquire what you demand, rather than what the store owner suggests you need.

Below, is essentially an entire cricket equipment inventory, you do not have to get all the goods on this list, as various clubs will loan you gear particularly at youth level:

Cricket whites, cricket bats, balls, helmets, gloves, batting (wicket keeping) inner gloves, wicket keeping gloves, batting pads, wicket keeping pads, box, chest pad, arm guard, inner thigh pad, cricket boots (bowling boots; batting boots), box (groin guard), stumps and bails.

For most cricket games you will ever participate in you will require to have your own set of whites. Cricket whites consist of white cricket trousers & cricket shirt. It is very important to check that you purchase a high-quality pair of cricket trousers & also a good white cricket shirt & jumper as it can easily turn cold if you are standing out on the field for a lengthy period of time particularly if you intend to play in England (the start and end of the season are the coldest).

If you can not hire kit from your club the other most critical items of equipment are a cricket bat & box. An excellent cricket bat is necessary if you wish to score heaps of runs & is a very individual piece of equipment, therefore spend several hours selecting your bat, if at all possible you ought to go to a shop & test drive one before you buy so you know how it feels to hit with. As soon as you know what you want you can often purchase bats on the World Wide Web much cheaper). You need a good box to protect your groin from the ball, as getting hit down below’ is very painful, so investing in a good box before you start is a clear must – you can not play cricket without one. Find superb deals on cricket balls.

What If You KNEW Everyone’s Finishing Stats On Opening Day?

  • December 27th, 2008

Yesterday, three Oakland A’s homered in a row, on three consecutive pitches, and two of these guys I’ve been following for some time: Milton Bradley and Frank Thomas.

Both are thought to have attitude problems. The Dodgers traded Bradley for that reason, and the same logic informed Kenny Williams’ decision to buy out Big Frank’s contract, despite the fact that he would have been a shoo-in first ballot Hall of Famer wearing a White Sox cap.

I think Frank will probably hit 40 homers for the A’s this year. Bradley I’m not sure about. He’s inconsistent, at best.

But what if we KNEW exactly how every player on our team would perform, statistically? Konerko will hit .279, blast 38 homers, and have 100 runs batted in.

Thome will knock out 44 big ones, hit .293, and have 115 runs batted in.

Would that make our job as a big league manager a no-brainer?

I doubt it. As you know, you can have some great individual performers who are dugout Typhoid Mary’s. Gary Sheffield’s tenure with the Dodgers comes to mind.

Nearly every year, he hit over .300, his home run production was at or near 40, as I recall, and he had a decent number of runs batted in. But he was reportedly poisonous in the dugout, deriding management at every turn.

Just having predictably solid performers on your squad is no guarantee of a championship. You have to have leadership and at least some chemistry, as well.

There’s no question the White Sox of ‘06 look every bit as strong as the Series Champs of ‘05, and maybe stronger. But you don’t win on paper.

Those bad boys in Oakland have something special. Call it fire in the belly or the need to vindicate oneself.

When we examine Big Frank’s stats come September, or even October, we’ll see how much this extra emotion factors into the A’s ultimate ranking.

The Race is On!

  • December 27th, 2008

The race for college football’s national championship began last weekend and as expected, everyone’s still chasing the two-time defending champs, the USC Trojans. USC had little trouble winning at Hawaii last Saturday, taking care of the Rainbows 63-17. The 63 points were the most scored by a Trojan team since 1988 and the 46-point margin of victory was the second-biggest in the Pete Carroll era.

USC has now won 23 straight games and 34 of its last 35. When the latest AP poll was released on Tuesday, USC was naturally, still No.1. That makes it 20 straight polls that the Trojans have been No. 1, just one shy of Miami-Florida’s record 21-poll run set during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. With USC idle this week, the Trojans are assured of at least tying Miami’s record when next week’s poll is released.

While USC had a ‘vacation’ in Honolulu last Saturday, SIX top-25 teams lost on opening weekend, four to unranked opponents. Most notable, was Oklahoma. The seventh-ranked Sooners lost at home to unranked TCU, 17-10. The loss was Bob Stoops’ first-ever September loss while at Oklahoma and it also ended a 19-game home winning streak for the Sooners (all 19 had been by double-digits). No. 9 Miami-Florida lost an “ugly” game at Tallahassee, 10-7. The win ended No. 14 FSU’s six-game losing streak to the Hurricanes, despite the fact that the Seminoles gained just 170 total yards and QB Drew Weatherford completed 7-of-24 passes for 67 yards.

No. 16 Auburn saw the nation’s third-longest winning streak end at 15, when the Tigers were upset at home by unranked Georgia Tech, 23-14. No. 17 Texas A&M lost at unranked Clemson 25-24, No. 18 Boise State got crushed at No. 13 Georgia 48-13 and No. 23 Pittsburgh lost at home to unranked Notre Dame, 42-21.

The four unranked teams that pulled upsets over their ranked opponents, were all rewarded by spots in the latest AP top-25. Georgia Tech is 17th, Notre Dame 20th, TCU is 22nd and Clemson claimed the final spot at No. 25. Oklahoma’s loss dropped the Sooners all the way to No. 18, the first time they’ve been out of the AP’s top-25 since December 2, 2001. Auburn, which finished No.2 in last year’s final poll to USC, dropped out of the top-25, as did A&M, Boise State and Pittsburgh.

STREAKS

USC owns the nation’s longest current winning streak at 23 with Utah second at 17. With Auburn’s loss, the third-longest winning streak now belongs to Iowa, at nine. The Hawkeyes play at Iowa State this Saturday. Boise State owns the longest current home winning streak at 25, followed by USC’s 22 straight home wins. Oklahoma’s 19-game streak was third but after the Sooners’ loss, Iowa now has the third-longest home winning streak with Saturday’s 56-0 win over Ball State giving them 19 straight home wins.

Boise State also owned the nation’s longest road winning streak (10) but of course that ended with its 48-13 loss at Georgia. USC’s win at Hawaii moves the Trojans to the top of yet another list, with 10 straight road wins. Following the Trojans are Utah (9) plus Texas and Oklahoma, both win eight straight road wins. The No.2 Longhorns will put their eight-game road winning streak on the line this Saturday, with a visit to Columbus, Ohio where they will meet No. 4 Ohio State.

Central Florida was the only team to go winless in 2004 (0-11) and entered the 2005 season with a nation-worst 15 straight losses. After losing to South Carolina 24-15 last Thursday, in Steve Spurrier’s return to college football, the no-so Golden Knights stand head-and-shoulders in front of the nation’s other losers with 16 straight losses.

The nation’s two longest road losing streaks came to end last weekend. Baylor, which had lost 24 straight, won at SMU 28-23 and Vanderbilt, losers of 18 straight on the road, won at Wake Forest 24-20. While UCF has lost 14 straight road games, the Golden Knights do not now own the nation’s longest current road losing streak as well. That ‘honor’ goes to Buffalo, as the Bulls have now lost 18 straight on the road after losing 38-0 at Connecticut last Thursday.

HOW ABOUT THOSE ‘NEW’ COACHES?

As part of my college preview series, I did an article on the 23 head coaches that were either opening the 2005 season with their first-ever head caoching job or were in their first year at a new school. This past weekend, 20 of them were in action. While Charlie Weis’ 42-21 win with Notre Dame at Pittsburgh made the biggest ’splash’, as a whole, the group didn’t fare that well. Three schools with new head coaches, Marshall, Oklahoma State and San Jose State, played non-lined games and all three won. As for the other 17, they went a collective 8-9 SU and a poor 6-11 ATS. LSU’s Les Miles, Stanford’s Walt Harris and Utah State’s Brent Guy make their debuts this weekend.

The Value of Custom Baseball Gloves

  • December 27th, 2008

Baseball gloves have advanced tremendously over the years. From the original game played with the bare hands to the advanced models of today, baseball gloves have as rich a history as the game itself.

The first gloves developed were not accepted easily since many players thought negatively of those using them. Today’s players, however, accept baseball gloves as a necessary and standard part of the game. Modern baseball gloves come in a variety of sizes, comforts, accessories and price ranges.

For the more serious baseball enthusiast, custom baseball gloves are all the rage. Today’s baseball gloves can be customized for a particular fit, color, type of leather, and more. Since pricing can range from $100, on the low end, to more than $400 for high-end custom made baseball gloves, most beginning players do not find them necessary. For semi-professional or professional baseball players, however, most will say that they would not go back to generic gloves.

Different companies will obviously offer different custom baseball gloves to choose from. Some companies specialize in material types and others will specialize in matching the player with a glove with the perfect fit. Some baseball glove manufacturers also offer custom baseball gloves that are designed for catchers, infielders and outfielders. Those earning a living playing baseball or those who are very serious players will likely benefit from purchasing a custom baseball glove.

Most every major supplier of American baseball gloves will offer customizable options. When shopping for the right glove, you can begin by reviewing the company or companies’ Web sites to see what they have to offer. Keep in mind that the custom baseball gloves offered will be quite a bit pricier than “generic” models available at sport and discount stores. From reading reviews and comments on custom baseball gloves, those who use them are not likely to revert back to standard gloves. You can expect to spend several hundred dollars on a custom glove, but the glove is designed with you in mind and can meet and exceed your highest expectations.

Fix your Blocked Golf Shots with the Wall Drill

  • December 27th, 2008

Wall Drill ~ Fix your Block

Problem:The player tends to let their lower-body slide horizontally.

Result: The players hands get trapped due to the over-active lower body, and either remain open at impact causing a slice (most common), or flip over quickly causing a large hook. The trapped hands travel on an in to out path causing the ball to start to the right of the intended target.

The Drill: How many rounds have you played, where you’re trying to get those extra yards out of a shot, and are sadly disappointed when you block it badly into the trees? It happens to many players, myself included. The block is one of the most frustrating shots to have in golf; not to mention it is often accompanied by a wicked slice that makes looking for the ball almost pointless.

What causes the block? Most commonly it’s an over-active lower body, your hips and knees tend to slide towards the target in your efforts to get those extra yards. To be fair, even in professional swings, there is a slight hip movement towards the target, but it is minimal. In amateurs the hip slide tends to be a lot more noticeable.

There are many simple fundamentals that can help to contribute to a blocked shot, firstly a stance that is too wide reduces turning and promotes the slide. Secondly, knees that are too bent, helps to destabilize the lower body contributing to added unwanted movement (be sure to give the next person that says to you “bend your knees” a good smack – having your knees unlocked is perfect).

This drill helps to promote a turning of you hips rather than a slide, which is exactly what you want to have on the downswing. Setup so your hips are perpendicular to a wall; make sure that the wall is ending so you have some room to swing the club through impact if needed. There should be about 2-3 inches between your hips and the wall, if you setup normally, with a proper stance. This is more than enough room to complete your swing motion. Taking swings at about 10 percent speed; focus on turning your hips on the downswing, rather than sliding. The wall acts as a brace, and gives you the negative feedback you need when you make contact with it. At impact your hips should have cleared to create close to a 45 degree angle with the wall, without touching it. This drill is very effective at reducing hip slide, try it out!

How to Practice Your Golf Game in the Winter

  • December 26th, 2008

Now that the cold weather is upon us, it doesn’t mean that you should hang up the clubs. Sure, you may not be able to play very often but it doesn’t mean that you can’t keep working on your game. Here are a few tips so you don’t have to re-learn the game once the spring rolls around.

Grip

A great swing starts with a great grip. Learning the proper neutral grip can be very uncomfortable. The easiest way to work on it is while your watching your favorite TV show. Before the show starts, take a practice club (preferably with a training grip on it) and place your hands on in perfect position. While you are watching, you will be concentrating more on the TV show than your grip. As a commercial comes on, take your grip off. Once the show starts again, re-place your hands on the club again. Because you are watching TV, you won’t be thinking about how uncomfortable it is to learn the proper grip. If you keep doing this regularly throughout the winter, you will have the proper neutral grip mastered as the new season rolls around.

The Set Up

The proper athletic set up position takes effort. After a long lay off, your body will try to set up in a position that takes very little effort. This means that you may end up in a position that is all hunched over or not athletic. To remedy this, try to set up a practice station at home using a full length mirror (these can be purchased cheaply at Home Depot or Wal-Mart). Once you have your mirror(s), take your proper set up position and have a friend or spouse place masking tape on the mirror indicating your spine angle, and hip and knee flex. Throughout the winter, keep doing your set up and look to see if you match the masking tape when you are in your set up position. This is an easy way to make sure you don’t get lazy and lose your set up angles throughout the winter.

The Full Swing

A long lay off effects your full swing as well. Making a great swing requires you to coil and uncoil your body properly. This action takes effort. After taking time off of this game, you will want to hit the ball the easiest way possible. This means you will just try to hit the ball with your arms as opposed to coiling and uncoiling your body. To keep your body coiling and uncoiling properly, just take one of your clubs, a broom stick or a weight lifting bar (no weights) and hold the ends of the object as you place it across your shoulders. Then, take your athletic set up position. From here, simply coil the shoulders back in a circular, clockwise motion, while resisting your hip turn. Once you are tightly wound up, uncoil in a counter clockwise direction by turning the lower body the other way. If you do this drill properly, the object on your shoulders will resemble the twirling blades of a helicopter. If your club is moving in an up and down see saw action, you are not coiling and uncoiling properly. Just remember to make sure that you mimic the helicopter blades and get the tight feeling as you coil back. If you do, you will maintain the proper coiling and uncoiling of your body so that you won’t just try to hit the ball with your arms next season.

The Short Game

As you know, the short game is a very important part of the game. Unfortunately, a long lay off really causes you to loose any touch you have around the greens. All you have to do to keep your short game sharp, is practice a little throughout the winter.

First, you should set up a putting station. There are plenty of inexpensive putting devices out there that will create an artificial golf hole that you can set up at home (some even include indoor outdoor carpet for those who don’t have the proper surface). Try to practice putting as often as you can (especially the short putts). If you have a friend or spouse that likes to play golf, try to have putting competitions on a regular basis. This will help you to keep your putting sharp when the new season rolls around.

Secondly, you can use this same putting station to practice your chipping stroke (if you don’t have the proper chipping surface, simply find a 1×1 piece of higher pile carpet and lay it on the ground to chip from). If you do use a piece of carpet as I suggest, you can move it closer or farther away from the hole, to vary your chipping distances. When next season begins, you will be able to get the ball close to the hole instead of leaving these chip shots short of the green.

Finally, pitching can really be difficult if you haven’t practiced in a while. What I used to do in the winter, was to practice hitting pitch shots into an old upholstered chair. This game me a specific target to aim for. If you don’t have an old chair like this laying around, you can always get a small pitching net at any golf store. Just set up the net or chair in an area that you won’t break anything. Then, use your small piece of carpet to pitch from and you will be sure to keep your touch around the greens.

In order to eliminate the beginning of the season frustration, it just takes a little creativity and practice. Hopefully, you will set up a practice station at home and try a few of the drills I mentioned. It does take a little effort, but once the new season rolls around, you will be glad you kept working on your game.

Until next time,

Procure TVs on the World Wide Web

  • December 26th, 2008

With brand new hi-tech improvements including digital Telly, Hi-Definition Television, Freesat & home cinema sound, if you’re current television set is older than five years old, then this moment is a fantastic time to swap it. But, as technology is developed near enough every day, acquiring a new television set can be for the most part complicated & confusing.

This TV guide attempts to present an insight on all the most up-to-date innovations that will help to take your telly pleasure to a wonderful new level. Buy a LCD TV at a great price from John Lewis.

Hi Definition Telly: Perhaps one of the most vital improvement to TV since the innovation of colour technology, Hi Def (HD) telly presents detail, clarity & colour, with images often 4xs as sharp as various conventional television sets. To witness High-Definition television programmes you will need to possess a Hi Def Ready television. Sky and Freesat have already started to transmit hi definition television series meaning you can now benefit from a collection of your favourite programmes, films & sporting occasions with incredible realistic pictures.

Integrated Digital Tuner: A television with an incorporated digital tuner (more often than not referred to as idTV) permits you to receive all free to air digital TV channels, including the likes of: E4, BBC3, Sky News & various more without the demand for a separate set top box.

Freesat: A new digital satellite television service supplied by joint venture between the BBC & ITV, offering you free High Def Telly programmes at no further price. Freesat has no contract, no subscription, but instead just an up-front price for the TV, satellite dish and installation. And because Freesat is broadcast via satellite, its obtainable to roughly almost each and every house in the United Kingdom. Freesat telly is at this moment in time only available with Panasonic TVs.

LCD or Plasma Tellies: Though LCD & Plasma TVs operate in extremely different ways, the gains of both are very similar. Even so, it’s critical to consider that when selecting between a Plasma or LCD TV, it is in truth basically a question of size. LCD is at its optimal performance up to and including thirty-two inches, whilst Plasma delivers best performance at 37 inches and beyond. Thus, if you need to purchase a smaller flat panel telly, then (short for Liquid Crystal Display) gives the superior performance, whereas on the other hand if you call for1 a bigger screen size, then Plasma is undoubtedly the greatest choice.

In conclusion, its necessary to keep in mind when choosing the correct television for you, to think about your available funds, your screening distance, the appearance you desire and if it’s to be an LCD or Plasma TV.

Golf Swing Technique And How To Improve It

  • December 25th, 2008

There are two approaches to achieving a better golf swing. There is improving your physical capabilities…and improving your golf swing technique.

How many times has your teaching pro recommended a golf swing technique change and you couldn’t do it no matter how many balls you hit? It’s because you didn’t have the “physical capability” to successfully make the change and repeat it.

For example, if you didn’t have adequate core strength and flexibility, you would be unable to create and maintain the “x-factor”, or the separation between the hip rotation and shoulder rotation, therefore losing force and ultimately distance.

But by implementing simple, golf exercises…it is possible to develop the ability to execute these key actions, which result in greater clubhead speed, force and distance.

Identifying your weak points, and doing golf-specific exercises to replicate the specific action will allow you to achieve the specific golf swing technique change effectively.

I’ve seen some very simple, yet effective golf exercises and stretches that when implemented and done consistently can result in substantial increases in driving distance and accuracy.

Creating specific exercises related to your teaching pros golf swing technique recommendations can give you the quickest results…that are lasting.

Suffice it to say…the development of your physical abilities…especially strength and flexibility…plays a critical role in not only improving your golf swing technique…but in hitting the ball farther and much straighter.

The bottom line…your golf swing technique is dictated by your physical capabilities.
