As techniques improved, larger panes became available and were used to create the characteristic Georgian windows, with narrow glazing bars and six panes in each sash. They became a key part of Regency architecture.

The Victorians continued to favor sash windows, but added their own style with elaborate carved and molded ornamentation. Gradated windows, diminishing in size with the height of the building, and large bay windows are characteristic of this period. Four paned sashes are more common in houses built at this time. The wealthy often chose to have older styles of window added to their property to distinguish themselves from the increasingly common use of plate glass sash windows with the slimmer glazing bars that were once prized.

Sash windows have become far less common during the last century, despite being the favorite style at the beginning of the 20th century, due to the increase in cheap, mass-produced styles of window. Demand has recently grown again due to increased awareness of architectural history. Sash windows today use all the latest technology, but retain the elegance and functionality of traditional sashes, and preserve the historic style of the older houses.

Avanta signs up another full floor of tenants

A City of London business centre has expanded its space by adding another let floor that is already signed for, after a sharp increase in demand for shared office space.

The new floor has had interior and exterior redecoration and was opened at the beginning of April, but before it officially opened six businesses had already signed up for the space.

Along with reports for demand in prime serviced office space, the City centre has exhibited a 29% increase in enquiries for workspace since 2010 opened.

The building centre is operated by Avanta, the serviced office provider, and was launched in January of 2009 and was let 80% just a three months after officially opening its doors.

David Alberto, the managing director of Avanta, stated that with nearly 700 enquiries for available workspace located near the city since the beginning of the year, the company is very optimistic.

He explained that generally it takes a year to two years for office space to become completely filled, so the fact that the new floor was half let before it opened shows that demand is on the rise.

The centre is found in a quiet square near the Liverpool Street Station offering it the ability to charm potential letters with a calm environment despite being in the midst of a central London business location. Originally, the complex was made up of spice warehouses giving it a period look that was maintained despite plenty of refurbishment.

The square is partially roofed so that it offers protection from the rush of Liverpool Street while allowing businesses to take advantages of the opportunities of a central city location.
