Effective Human Resources Management

  • October 2nd, 2009

Success in the modern business world depends heavily on good people management skills. With a little effort you may gain and develop these skills. It may be an advantage to have a natural affinity for people, even so you can do numerous things that will simplify the process. Forging relationships: Start by memorizing a person’s name. Speak to staff; make eye contact as you are talking. Do be respectful, also pay attention to everything the other individual has to say, regardless of whether you agree or not. Paying attention to what employees say is one of the best talent management skills you can develop. Welcome any contributions from your co-workers. Keep your word: Keeping your promises is crucial. If you can’t keep your promises, the delicate bond of trust is damaged, and without trust people won’t perform at their best. Each time you give a commitment or give a promise, you are wasting your time and effort unless you keep your promises. The truth is, if your people can’t count on you, your staff can’t be relied on to be there when you actually need them. Be open to any comments: It’s a two-way street. People management skills mean having an open mind to all feedback. If you are able to prove approachability and receptiveness, you prove that you want to listen to your co-worker’s feedback, and they will appreciate yours. Encouraging open discourse also opens doors to creative trouble-shooting, ways of fulfilling goals, and strengthens the team. By allowing the team to express their views, the project will become important to every member.

Promote all sorts of communication: Your people management techniques come down to the same concept – communication. Maintaining an open door policy, employ good listening techniques, keep an open mind, and encourage all your staff to express themselves. Inspire staff not just to speak to you, but also with each other. The exchange of ideas is imperative in the creative process, if the staff communicate effectively, you can discover any problems at an early stage, permitting corrective action to be put in place to prevent any further problems.

Developing these skills will take some time, however the payoff is worthwhile. By encouraging a good team dynamic and developing effective listening techniques, you can easily have a successful business.
