Malaysia Shells out 16 Million Ringgit for 2010 Olympics Program

The Malaysian government has announced that it is beefing up its Road to London Olympics program by allocating a total of 16 million ringgit. Majority of the funds will be used to train local athletes believed to be potential medal winners in the prestigious sporting event.
According to reports, nearly 20 players from four sports – namely badminton, diving, archery and track cycling – will become part of this ambitious program.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister, said that the athletes will get full support in terms of participations to other international competitions prior to the Olympics in order to expose them to their possible rivals by 2012. Yassin headed the meeting at the Cabinet Committee on Sports earlier this week. He added that the aforementioned amount is enough to help these athletes reach their full potential in time for the 2012 event.
Malaysia is bidding to get its first-ever Olympic gold medal in 2012. The government is urging the public to give moral support to the athletes.
The athletes chosen to become part of this program are: 2008 Beijing Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei wil be lifting her yonex badminton racket, Wong Mew Choo, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heon, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Zakry-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty (badminton); Cheng Chu Sian, Wan Khalmizam Wan Abdul Aziz, Nazrin Aizat, Mohd Marbawi Sulaiman (archery); Azizul Hasni Awang, Rizal Tisin, Josiah Ng, Mohd Edrus Yunus and Junaidi Nasir (track cycling), Leong Mun Yee and Pandelela Rinong (diving).
Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, the Youth and Sports Minister, said that they will be including other athletes in the future.
