Work Stress Increases Risk of Heart Disease in Women

  • June 2nd, 2010

According to a research, women are more likely to suffer from heart disease if they face high stress at work. The research comes on the heels of an HSE report this week that said that shift work makes women more susceptible to breast cancer, with nearly 2000 women being diagnosed with this condition in the UK.

Recent study suggests that there is a strong probability that work pressure can trigger heart disease in working women.

Researchers in a Danish Study closely monitored the health of over 12000 female nurses Although similar attempts have been made to study the risks of heart disease in men, very few health studies have been conducted among women employees.

The researchers studied over 12000 female nurses aged between 45-64 years of age about the work pressure they experienced at work and kept a close watch on their health for 15 years from 1993 to 2008.

It was seen that 580 of them had been diagnosed with heart diseases, which included 369 cases of angina and 138 cases of heart attacks.

Keeping other virulent factors at hand like smoking and diabetes, the researchers found that those who stated their work pressure as extremely high were 50% more prone to develop heart disease. Those who said that work pressure was moderately high had a 25% higher risk of suffering from heart problems.
